Así pensaba Hipócrates, y también sus sucesores durante dos mil años. Hoy permanecen huellas importantes de esa teoría en el temperamento (sanguíneo, flemático, colérico, melancólico...). El sentido del humor es hoy algo bien distinto, pero ese factor humano ha determinado las grandes intuiciones, los grandes giros e innovaciones en el ámbito médico y sanitario, en especial desde finales del siglo XVIII.
Luca Borghi ofrece un amplio recorrido histórico, desde Hipócrates y Galeno, hasta Galileo, Pasteur o Fleming, deteniéndose en aquellos hitos que han cambiado el curso de la historia (la peste, la viruela y la tuberculosis, los primeros hospitales, el cólera y las vacunas, la cirugía, la anestesia, la enfermería y la importancia de la mujer, la radiología, la malaria y los primeros trasplantes, etc.).
Luca Borghi (Bolonia, 1962) enseña Historia de la Medicina en la Universidad Campus Biomédico de Roma. Desde la Filosofía de la ciencia y la Bioética, ha investigado en la historia de las disciplinas biomédicas interesándose particularmente en sus huellas materiales: lugares, manuscritos, instrumentos antiguos e investigaciones llevadas a cabo por sus protagonistas.
